66 days to Christmas

Santa's Workshop escape room is almost here: take a peek

Twenty-four short chapters, twenty-four village puzzles and two age tracks that unlock the same Clue Letter every day from December 1 to Christmas Eve.

The story

Every Christmas Eve, Honey Hollow Village hangs the Golden Star Chime on the Great Pine in Lantern Square so its clockwork bells can guide Santa's sleigh. But on the morning of December 1, when Mallow opens the oak storage chest at the Honeycomb Hearth Bakery, the red velvet cushion is empty. From December 1 to December 24, your kids join Mallow, Clover, Hazel, Finn and Head Elf Pip for one short illustrated chapter and one village puzzle a day (about 10 minutes, story included) to follow the trail and bring the chime back by Christmas Eve.

Mallow's 24-Day Christmas Mystery is a cozy, screen-free December routine for breakfast or bedtime. Both age tracks come in the same download, share the same 24 read-aloud chapters and unlock the same daily Clue Letter for the 24-Day Tracker Map, so younger and older siblings can read together and compare their letters.

One story, two age tracks

  • Little Helpers (ages 5-7, no reading needed for the puzzles): after a grown-up reads the chapter and the short prompt aloud, kids solve one picture puzzle from six rotating types (crayon path mazes, shadow matches, spot the difference, count and color, pattern strips and size order) to find the day's winning Toy Button. Every button has a color and a shape (red heart, gold star, blue snowflake, green holly), so it works in color or in black & white.
  • Junior Detectives (ages 8-11, escape-room props): older kids crack one in-world village prop from seven rotating types: blueprint mazes (10x10 to 14x14), cipher wheel telegrams, 10x10 word searches, picture math, logic boards, 4x4 picture sudoku and 5x5 Chime Code grids.

Neither track repeats the same puzzle type two days in a row.

Four weeks across Honey Hollow Village

  1. Week 1 (Days 1-6) · Bakery & Post Office: from the empty chest at the Honeycomb Hearth Bakery to the Woodland Post Office, Clover's mail clipboard and the Twin Bridges
  2. Week 2 (Days 7-12) · Great Oak Library Tree: Hazel's high bookshelf, the basement stacks, the reading nook and the spiral stairs
  3. Week 3 (Days 13-18) · River Mill & Forge: Finn's frozen waterwheel, the Lantern Forge, the humming telegraph wire and Pine-Cone Choir Hall
  4. Week 4 (Days 19-24) · Clocktower & Great Pine: Lantern Square, the clocktower stairs, Snowdrop Burrow and the Christmas Eve finale

Every six days the letters spell a six-letter weekly word. On Day 24 kids color Pip's Magic Star Chime Picture and fill in their certificates.

Three ways to play through December

Staple your child's 28-page track and turn one page a day (about 2 minutes of setup, no cutting), slip each day into a numbered envelope using the 24 printable envelope labels in the Grown-Up Guide (about 15 minutes of setup), or print both tracks for Sibling Team-Up Mode. Missed a busy evening? No puzzle depends on the real date, so you can catch up with two or three chapters on the weekend. The three telegram days work with the cut-out Brass Decoder Wheel or the no-cut Decoder Table.

Every puzzle is generated and independently solved by our own puzzle software, and both tracks are checked to spell the same daily letters and weekly words. The illustrations were made with AI image tools from our own prompts and art direction, then edited and laid out by us; the story text was drafted with AI help and edited by us.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Print your track (or both)

Print Little Helpers (ages 5-7), Junior Detectives (ages 8-11), or both for siblings. Staple the pages into a storybook stack (about 2 minutes) or slip each day into a labeled envelope (about 15 minutes).

  2. Step 2

    Read today's chapter

Read the short illustrated chapter aloud together at breakfast or bedtime. Each one picks up where yesterday's clue left off.

  3. Step 3

    Solve today's puzzle

Younger kids find the winning Toy Button on a picture puzzle; older kids crack a village prop. Both tracks reveal the same daily Clue Letter.

  4. Step 4

    Fill the Tracker Map

Write each letter on the 24-Day Tracker Map to build four six-letter weekly words, then color the Magic Star Chime Picture on Day 24 and hand out the certificates!

Perfect for

  • Advent countdown (Dec 1-24)
  • Siblings ages 5-7 & 8-11
  • Breakfast or bedtime reading
  • Screen-free December

What you need

  • A printer and paper (US Letter or A4)
  • A pencil, an eraser and crayons or colored pencils (red, gold or yellow, blue and green for the Toy Buttons)
  • About 10 minutes a day
  • Envelopes and scissors, optional: the storybook stack and the no-cut Decoder Table need neither

Questions about this kit

Can my 6-year-old and 9-year-old play together?

Yes, that is what the two tracks are for. Both have the same story chapter at the top of each day and lead to the same Clue Letter. You read the chapter once, each child solves the puzzle made for their age, and they compare letters on their Tracker Maps.

What if we start late or miss a day?

No puzzle depends on the real date or day of the week, and each day takes about 10 minutes. If you miss an evening or start a few days into December, read two or three chapters together on the weekend to catch up.

Does my 5-year-old need to read?

Not for the puzzles. A grown-up or older sibling reads the chapter and the short prompt aloud. The Little Helpers puzzles are all visual (tracing paths, matching shadows, spotting differences, counting, continuing patterns and ordering by size) and end with a Toy Button marked by both color and shape, so they also work in black & white.

Do I need envelopes or scissors?

No. In storybook mode you staple or clip the pages and turn one a day, and the telegram days work with the no-cut Decoder Table as well as the cut-out Brass Decoder Wheel. If you want an envelope countdown, 24 printable envelope labels are in the Grown-Up Guide.

Are the puzzles different every day?

Yes. The Junior Detectives track rotates through seven puzzle types and the Little Helpers track through six, and neither repeats the same type two days in a row.

Where are the hints and answers?

In the separate 19-page Grown-Up Guide: a read-aloud prompt and a nudge for every Little Helpers day, three step-by-step hints for every Junior Detectives day, and a visual answer key for both tracks. A day's page never shows its own answer; each new day opens by recapping the clue solved the day before.
